Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes. - Benjamin Franklin.

Filing a tax return is mandatory for any business and almost all individuals. The individual can file his own tax return. However, due to the complicated Tax Law that frequently changes, it is wise to consult either a firm specializing in tax returns or a tax accountant. For businesses, it is almost certain that expert assistance of a tax accountant is required to file the tax return correctly at local, State as well as Federal level. It is not uncommon for large corporations to maintain a team of tax accountants to do the task.

A tax accountant is simply an individual who assists a taxpayer in preparing a tax return -Hussey. While the definition of a tax accountant takes only a few words, the responsibility of a tax accountant, is really much more complicated than filing the tax return. In actual fact, to take advantages of the various incentives within the Tax Law, a good tax accountant will likely spend lots of time on tax planning or providing advice on a range of tax reduction strategies, rather than actually preparing tax return itself. For multinational corporations, a good tax return strategy will potentially translate to millions of dollars saved in tax reduction.

Individuals who do not want to consult the tax accountant for help and wish to do it on their own can use a tax accounting software to make it easier. Tax accounting software will make the tax return filing process simpler by automating the flow of paperwork, account for transactions (paycheck, paying of bills, etc), and maintain orderly and accurate records.

To make it simpler for people to file their returns, a lot of information is put up by IRS on their official website. For example, the IRS states, “Every year millions of people file Federal Income Tax returns even though they are not required to”. A section is then dedicated to this topic, which assists the individual to find out if he/she really needs to file a tax return at federal level. Tax refunds can be requested in the case that filing was not required but has been done for previous years.

If information on the IRS website is not sufficient to make the filing process easier, someone can always turn to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Taxpayer Advocate Service is a service/program provided by the IRS. Nina Olson, the National Taxpayer Advocate, heads this program. The objective of the program is to simplify the process for individuals who experience tax related problems, including tax return and tax refund. Taxpayer Advocate Service can be reached by calling a national toll-free number, by writing a letter or can walk into a local office.
